Massive tree with a single trunk and horizontal branching found in lowland areas, along streams, and in floodplains. Brown bark exfoliates in irregular pieces to reveal creamy white inner bark with mature trees displaying mottled bark. Leaves are 3-5 lobed and dark green with coarse marginal teeth (4-10”). Female flowers give way to fuzzy, long stalked, spherical fruiting balls (1 3/8” diameter) that ripen in fall and disperse seeds with wind. Mature height and spread of up to 100’. Prefers full sun and medium to wet well-drained soils.
