Seedling 2'-3'

Upright, rounded, multi-branched shrub that is often used to reduce erosion along streambanks. Young shoots are purplish but turn grayish brown as they age and will spread if not pruned. Narrow, linear leaves (2-4” long and 1/3” wide) are blue-green above and pale green beneath with serrate margins. Catkins appear in spring before leaves and contain tiny flowers in dense clusters. Mature height and spread of up to 5’.  Prefers full sun and wet, well-drained soils and tolerates intermittently flooded soils, but is intolerant of dry soils. Grows well in sandy soils and thrives in poor soils.

Uses: Shelterbelt, Watershed, Habitat/Food Wildlife, Environmental Forestry
