Spicebush is found in moist woods, bottomlands, and along streams and ponds. It has clusters of tiny aromatic greenish-yellow flowers that bloom along the branches in early spring before the leaves. Male flowers are larger and showier than female flowers, and female flowers grow red berry-like drupes that mature in fall that are aromatic and can be used for flavoring and also attract birds. Leaves are thick and light green (up to 5” long) with yellow fall color and are aromatic when crushed. Mature height and spread of up to 12’. Prefers well-drained soils in part shade.
