Speckled alder is a fast-growing, thicket forming spreading tree that can be found in wet sandy or gravely soils along water, and gets its name from white warty spores that speckle the bark. Flowers are separate male and female catkins that appear in early spring. Female catkins are followed by 1” long fruiting cones with winged seeds that mature in the fall and resemble small pine cones and are enjoyed by birds. Leaves are leathery, green, wrinkled, wedge shaped, and have hairy undersides and serrate margins with insignificant fall color. Mature height and spread of up to 25’. Prefers medium to wet soils and full sun to part shade, avoid full shade.
