Medium sized shrub found in lowland areas, swamp borders, floodplains, wetlands, and along streams and ponds. Twigs and leaf undersides have silky hairs, and flowers are tiny and yellowish-white blooming in late spring. Oval shaped medium green leaves (2-5” long) with bright red fall color. Fruits attract birds and are edible to humans but can cause stomach upset. If left alone, shrub will spread and form thickets. Mature height and spread of up to 12’. Prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, slightly acidic soils.
