River Birch

River birch is fast-growing and typically found on floodplains and along streams. The bark is salmon-pink to reddish brown and exfoliates, and leaves are diamond shaped, leathery, dark green, up to 3.5” long with double toothed margins and have yellow fall color. Flowers are drooping catkins that are brownish on male plants and greenish and upright on female plants. Mature height of up to 70’ and spread of up to 60’. Prefers medium to wet soils and full sun to part shade, including semi-aquatic conditions.
