The red spruce features a conical, narrow crown and is usually found along slopes or in higher elevations. It’s needles are green/yellow, shiny, and curve upward. The bark is reddish/brown and scaly, and the wood is soft and has a faint reddish color. Cones are reddish brown, 1-2" long, and smooth. It can be used as a Christmas tree or for windbreaks and is used for food and habitat by many birds and squirrels. Mature height up to 80’ with a spread of up to 25’. Prefers full sun and moist but well-drained sandy loam soils.
