The red maple has a rounded oval crown and is usually found in wet woods or flood plains. Emerging leaves, leafstalks, twigs, flowers, fruit, and fall color are red. Leaves are dark green and have 3 triangular lobes and are 2-5” long with toothed margins and pointed tips. Flowers appear in early spring and fruit is a two-winged samara. Seeds and buds are eaten by many birds. Mature height of up to 70’ and spread of up to 50’. Prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. Tolerates many soils and is very cold hardy.
