Red Cedar

The red cedar is a dense conifer that is usually found in wood margins and along fence rows. It has gray to red/brown exfoliating bark and wood is reddish brown and aromatic. Foliage is dark blue/green but may turn brown in winter. Females produce round blackish berry-like cones that ripen in the fall and are eaten by birds. Mature height of up to 65’ with a spread of up to 25’. Prefers full sun and dry to moist well-drained soils-has the best drought resistance of any native conifer.
Uses: Shelterbelt, Native, Habitat/Food Wildlife, Environmental Forestry, Timber
