Persimmon is a larger landscape tree with a rounded oval crown and rectangular, dark gray bark that is usually found along roadsides and streambanks. Fragrant white flowers bloom in spring and fruits are 1-2” in diameter ripening in the fall. Fruits are edible and are often used for syrups, jellies, or pies, but must be eaten when ripe. Root suckers are common and will result in shrubby growth if not pruned. Leaves are ovate to elliptic and glossy dark green with yellow/green fall color. Mature height of up to 60’ and spread of up to 35’. Prefers full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of many soils but prefers moist sandy soils and is somewhat drought tolerant.
