Small understory tree that occurs along streams and wooded slopes. Purple flowers bloom in spring and oblong fruits mature in early fall. Flavor and fleshy texture of fruits resemble banana. Fruits can be eaten raw or used in pies but have been known to cause nausea for some people. Fruits were used to make dyes by Native Americans and are enjoyed by wildlife. Leaves are elliptical and slightly drooping with yellow fall color. Mature height and spread of up to 30’. Prefers full sun to partial shade and wet acidic well drained soils.
