Hackberry

Seedling 12-18”
Hackberry is usually found in low woods along streams and in drier upland slopes. Bark is gray and has corky ridges and warty texture. Flowers are green and appear in spring (males in clusters), and female flowers give way to round fleshy berry-like drupes that mature to a deep purple containing one round seed. Fruits are edible to humans and somewhat sweet, and are eaten by many birds and wildlife. Leaves are glossy and green (up to 5” long) with yellow fall color. Mature height and spread of up to 60’. Prefers moist, organically rich, well-drained soils and full fun to part shade. Tolerates many soils and wind, as well as urban pollutants.
