Multi-trunked understory tree with a rounded crown found in open woodlands and thickets. Noted for stunning pea-like rose-purple flowers blooming in early spring before leaves in clusters of 4-10, providing early season nectar for hummingbirds. Flowers followed by flattened bean-like dry seedpods (2-4” long) that mature to brown in summer containing 6-12 seeds. Broadly ovate sharply pointed dull green leaves (3-5” across) with a papery texture and yellow fall color. Mature height of up to 30’ and spread of up to 35’. Prefers full sun to partial shade and medium moisture well-drained soils. Does not tolerate wet soils and does not transplant well.

Uses: Shelterbelt, Native, Habitat/Food Wildlife, Environmental Forestry
