The common lilac is an upright, multi-stemmed, suckering shrub that is usually found in open woodlands, and rocky hills. It is popular for its mid to late spring bloom of very fragrant, tubular, 4-lobed, lilac to purple flowers which bloom in large conical to narrow-pyramidal panicles (6-8” long). Suckers are common and will spread if not pruned. Pointed-ovate to heart shaped leaves (2-5” long) are dark gray-green with no fall color. Mature height up to 16’ and spread up to 12’. Prefers full sun and moist, fertile, organically rich soil with good drainage.

Uses: Shelterbelt, Habitat/Food Wildlife, Environmental Forestry
