Chestnut oak is usually found in wooded slopes and dry upland areas, but grows tallest in rich, well-drained soils. Flowers are yellow/green in separate male and female catkins that appear in late spring. Fruits are acorns up to 1.25” long that are an important food source for wildlife. Leaves are leathery and dark green with a fall color of yellow/brown. Mature height and spread of up to 70’. Prefers dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils and full sun but can adapt to many soil conditions and has good drought tolerance.
