Buttonbush in an easily grown shrub common to wet areas such as thickets, swamps, low woods, and along streams and ponds. It has 5-lobed tiny white fragrant flowers that grow in heads that resemble pin cushions in early summer. Flowers attract pollinators and hummingbirds and mature into hard ball-like fruits with multiple two-seeded nutlets that are NOT edible to humans. Leaves are glossy and bright green (up to 6” long) and are in pairs or whorls. Mature height of up to 12’ and spread of up to 8’. Prefers moist soils and full sun to part shade and will tolerate many soils except dry ones. Plants can be pruned or cut back in early spring.
