Black Gum
from $20.00
Seedling 12-18”
The black gum is a slow growing tree that is found in wet woods and near ponds with a straight trunk and rounded crown. Female and male trees are needed for pollination to produce fruit. Dark blue, 1/2” long fruits are enjoyed by wildlife and are edible to humans but are sour and best used in preserves. Leaves are dark green, toothed, and 5” long with excellent red fall color. Mature height of up to 50’ and spread of up to 30’. Prefers medium to wet soils and full sun to part shade and can grow in standing water. Cannot be moved once established due to long taproot.
