Open, upright, spreading, round but leggy suckering shrub that grows in low woods, swamps, bogs, moist thickets, and streambanks. Spreads by suckers that can be pruned if desired. Flowers are 5-petaled and white in clusters of 5-6 and leaves are glossy, obovate, and dark green (2-3” long) with finely toothed margins and red fall color. Has black berries in fall that are bitter but are used to make jams and jellies and are eaten by wildlife. Mature height and spread of up to 6’. Prefers full sun to partial shade and tolerates many soils but prefers well-drained soils.
