Black Cherry
from $25.00
Seedling 18-24”
Black cherry is usually found in woods and along streams with a rounded crown and is known for its spring bloom, attractive foliage, and fall color. Pendulous clusters (up to 6” long) of white flowers appear in spring and are followed by drooping clusters of small red cherries that ripen in late summer. Fruits are bitter and are not edible fresh off the tree but may be used to make jellies and jams or to flavor liquors and are eaten by wildlife. Leaves are narrow, glossy, green, and up to 5” long with yellow and red fall color. Bark is dark and scaly and wood is hard and reddish brown and is used commercially. Mature height of up to 80’ and spread of up to 60’. Prefers moist, well-drained soils and full sun to part shade. Transplanting is difficult due to long taproot.
Uses: Habitat/Food Wildlife, Timber, Native, Human Food, Environmental Forestry, Watershed
