American hazelnut is a rounded, multiple stemmed shrub found in dry or moist thickets, woodlands, valleys, and uplands. In spring, flowers appear in catkins, with female catkins giving way to small, egg shaped (1/2” long) edible nuts that mature in late summer and are encased in leafy, husky ragged-edged bracts. Nuts may be roasted or ground and are also loved by wildlife. Leaves are ovate, double toothed, and dark green (3-6” long) with variable fall color. Spreads by root suckers that can be pruned. Mature height of up to 16’ and spread of up to 13’. Prefers full sun to partial shade and medium well-drained soils.
